York

The 150-metre long Millennium bridge spans the river Ouse to the south of the City. The main 80m long span is supported by cables suspended from an arch inclined at 50 degrees to the horizontal, giving the appearance of a bicycle wheel. The bridge was opened by the Lord Mayor of the City on April 10, 2001, and then, to make assurance doubly sure, was opened again by the Duke of York on May 29.

Further information may be found in the Evening Press "This is York" website, the most comprehensive and informative "Millennium Bridge" website anywhere. It is only a pity that the "News" section ran out in July, 2001 with no more recent updates. Other links include a real-time video and two technical accounts by Lusas and Metrode.
