The Falkirk Wheel

That's right - the Falkirk Wheel is not a bridge, but nevertheless it is worthy of note as one of the outstanding engineering structures built to commemorate the Millennium in Britain.

Like the Gateshead bridge, the Falkirk Wheel is a world first - the world's first and only rotating boat lift. Built to replace a long-abandoned flight of eleven locks, the Falkirk Wheel raises boats 35 metres from the Clyde and Forth Canal up onto the Union Canal, thereby bridging the gap in the canal link between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

There is plenty of material on the web to provide further information. Perhaps the most useful general account is given by the Undiscovered Scotland website. Another good site, which brings together a lot of information is the Millennium Link and Wheel resource Pack. One of the slickest websites I have ever seen which gives a lot of technical information is that posted by the architects RMJM. The 'official' website is a bit of a disappointment, being simply geared to the day tripper out for a fairground ride with a difference, as is also the Visitor Guide website; this last includes webcam views. Finally, for a picture gallery, see Frank Shackleton's site
